The Praying-On-You Mantis was a creepy addition to the garden in 2022. This year, I broke the bug into parts (the arms and legs, the wings, the face) and spread their creepy vibes to make 3 separate critters.
Let’s Recap the Making of the Praying-On-You Mantis
This one started with a paper plate and styrofoam teeth. I gave it some taped-up cardboard wings, arms and legs, and friendly hands to hold a flower.

I played around with animation for it:

The Arms and Legs

I liked the arms and legs, but they were in an awkward position for the praying mantis bug. I doodled some ideas and chose a 3 quarter emoji with wings. I used foam for the teeth and eyeballs. Wooden skewers gave stability to the arms and legs.

The Wings
I used a staple gun to attach the wings to an eyeball-forward flower.

The Face
I used a staple gun to attach the face to a garden stake. The face is creepy enough to stand alone and fits into my floating head motif this year.

I kept the Praying-On-You-Mantis because there were these promising elements. I’m glad I found a way to incorporate the face, the wings, and the arms and legs into new creepy lives in the garden.
